Samsung Galaxy Tab 750: The iPad challenger - Technology - Cell Phones

iPad's success has not gone unobserved. Rest of the world is slowly jump on the bandwagon, hoping to take a large piece out of Apple's pie. None had any visible success so far.

Today we have one more current, from the corporation that has been competently able to match, if not steal, iPhone's thunder in the smartphone market. Yes, ladies and gentlemen welcome Galaxy Tab 10.1, err Galaxy Tab 750, a capsule that Samsung launch with much fanfare in Delhi on August 10.

Tab 750 is designed and built with observance sole purpose in mind - better the completion. It's a tablet that shed extra pounds - ok grams -in matter of few weeks in January when Apple unveil the "ultra- thin" iPad 2. It's a tablet with which Samsung hopes to show the world that Honeycomb can be a viable slate in commission software (OS) and an alternative to those not sold on iOS. It's a tablet over which Apple and Samsung are fighting in courts crossways continents with Apple arguing it resembles iPad 2 a little too much! With so much riding on it, we put Tab 750 from beginning to end its paces to see it can shoulder the great expectations.

Looks that can kill

Looks matter. And Samsung has work very hard on making Tab 750 as stunning as technology permits at the moment. It's the sleekest and lightest 10-inch tablet in the world right now. Its low weight (565g), coupled with a design that is more rectangular and less four-sided figure, goes a long way in making Tab 750 a very contented tablet to hold.

Unlike iPad2 that is all aluminum, Tab 750 uses of glossy artificial as back cover, incredible that makes it seem less sturdy but is the secret of its low weight. However, the build quality is first class and no part of the tablet feels cheap. Honeycomb, the version of Android that powers Tab 750 doesn't require any physical buttons. Hence, the only buttons on Tab 750 are power/lock button and volume rocker, in our opinion a little too close to each other as many times we found myself drumming power button at what time we wanted to turn down volume.

Inside its svelte body, Tab 750 packs some serious hardware. It is motorized by a dual-core Tegra 2 central processing unit and 1GB RAM. There are two cameras - 3.2MP in rear and 2MP in the front. The tablet comes with 16GB internal luggage cubicle. There is option to expand it through a SD card.

Bitter-sweet Honeycomb

A tablet is as good as the in commission software it runs on. It's true for Tab 750. However, what makes this tablet stand apart from other Honeycomb strategy is what Samsung, a company whose edge is developed, has added to it.

Tab 750 has the best screen I have seen on a tablet. Ever! Not only the 1280X800 declaration makes for a crisp display, Samsung has used its know-how in LCD manufacturing to equip Tab 750 with a very bright and as a result very pleasing, screen. Also, 16:10 resolution and fantastic viewing angles mean that scrutiny films is a better experience on Tab 750 compared to the one on iPad2 that has a resolution of 4:3.

For rest of the stuff, Tab 750 is diverse deal. It has all the advantages, as well as weaknesses, of Honeycomb. The result is that at its basic, it's among the most practical and useful tablet out of the box. Web browsing with Honeycomb's tabbed browser is a very pleasing experience. So is multitasking, which though not as good as what offered by Playbook, is better than no matter which available on iPad.

Video playback is the similar story. Even though hold up for codecs and declaration is not as good as what offered by Playbook - or even Samsung Galaxy S II phone - it is definitely better than what opposition offers. Availability of an almost fully-functional file system - you can create/delete folders, access files directly - means more control for users and you can only copy files between your computer and Tab 750 without a middleman.

Now, where Tab 750 falters is in the overall polish and ease of use of apps. Though Samsung has put some widgets and mini apps as part of its TouchWiz customization of Honeycomb, it is clear that this tablet-version of Android remains a work in action. It is very rare but apps do crash sometimes. And despite all the hardware, UI animations are not always smooth.

An evolving app ecosystem is a bigger problem. While situation is not as dire as the one faced by Playbook, there are few apps in Android market that have been optimized for tablets. In theory, almost all Android apps work with Honeycomb but mostly they appear stretched on the tablet. Honeycomb 3.2 is supposed to set it right but Tab 750 ships with Honeycomb 3.1 with an update planned for prospect.

Battery, GPS etc

A tablet, if it has a functional GPS module, can work as an astounding navigation implement. You can set it on your cars dashboard and, due to a large screen, can without problems follow your progress. GPS on Tab 750 is fantastic to say the least. When used along with direction-finding app from Google, it works very well.

We wish we could say the same about the camera. Tab 750 continue the tradition of poor cameras on a tablet. Though we doubt nobody is going to miss it since holding a 10-inch tablet in front of you to click a picture is by no means the ideal way to click a photograph.

Battery life on Tab 750 is very good. In does fall small of high bar set by iPad 2. But it was good an adequate amount of to last around nine hours of screen up time with usual tablet work load - mail and twitter synced, some Web browsing, gaming and video playback. This easily makes for more than all-day computing.

A winner, almostDespite its shortcoming, and there are a few of them, our knowledge with Tab 750 was pleasant. Tab 750 scores well on multitasking, video playback and web browsing. And looks dashing while doing that due to its fantastic design and gorgeous screen. Add to it the solid experience with Google apps like Gmail, Navigation and Maps and Tab 750 offers an extremely good value this side of the iPad world.

But is it enough to beat the market leader? No. Quality of apps, sports competition and polished UI matter a lot. And here Tab 750 falls slightly short. Though, we are sure that anyone look for a sleek and light tablet that can excel at web browsing, video playback and navigation, will be well served by Tab 750.

Pros: Sleek and light, good browsing experience, fantastic screen, functional multitasking and file-system

Cons: Lack of apps, 30-pin power connector, no native HDMI port
