If you asked anybody to name a mobile phone, then the majority will respond with the answer "The iPhone". Such is the reputation that this phone has built over the years, that when the release of the iPhone 4 was announced, it became the most eagerly awaited handset ever.
Anybody who has seen or indeed owns an iPhone 4 will testify that the new "Retina" display that is incorporated produces stunning image quality. This new screen, currently the highest quality available on such a device, achieves such great quality thanks to the massive 960 x 640 resolution. Part of the reason behind the great quality is also thanks to the phones ability to exceed what your own eye can actually see, producing a staggering 326 pixels per square inch. This is where the screens name is derived from. Given that the screen will predominantly be used to view text, even when zoomed in the characters maintain a quality that makes them look more like a printed product rather than an item on a screen. In Plane Switching technology further helps produce a depth of colour never before seen, in addition to improved viewing angles. The real eye catching element of the screen is when it is displaying HD video footage, whether this is downloaded or recorded on the phones o wn camera. In landscape mode beautiful widescreen images are displayed, and the high storage capacity means the handset is perfect for viewing movies on long journeys.
Despite a host of new additions, its great to see that some of the favourite features from previous models remain on the iPhone 4. The remarkably simple homescreen layout is the same, simply requiring a swipe of your finger to access the next screen. There is a new way of grouping similar apps together under a single icon, helping to tidy up the potentially congested layout. The simplistic look also remains, with the solitary home button still located centrally on the front. And iTunes remains as the single best method for downloading and managing a variety of media. New features sit perfectly beside the old favourites. Not suffice with plain video capture, the iPhone 4 now offers high definition quality, with very pleasing results. Footage can be stored or uploaded directly to sites such as Facebook and Youtube. Video calling is featured heavily as well, thanks to the new "Facetime" system which differs greatly from previous attempts at this method encountered a few years back.. Relying upon a WiFi broadband connection rather than a phone network means not only is picture and sound improved, but excessive costs are also eliminated. So impressive is this new system that you can expect to see a version of it appearing on other handsets soon.
The iphone 4 is perhaps the most satisfying update we have seen since the iPhone was originally launched. Not content with minor changes, the developers have given the old format a facelift thanks to some great features and a simple yet stylish new design.
