The Music Industry: How Apple Changed It - Technology - Gadgets and Gizmos

The original iPod became an industry phenom that other companies have attempted to emulate. The idea behind the iPod was basic: provide users with an item in which they can save all their favorite music, making carrying digital libraries simple. CD players were no longer required, and gone was the need to hold those large CD carrying cases that held hundreds of CDs in one package. With the iPod, users could carry thousands of hours of music in their hands without the requirement of hundreds of CDs. As time advanced, the iPod changed shape, increased its battery life, created new lines of iPod Classic cases and built a new line of devices in place of its classic click-wheel device.

iPod Mini

When the iPod Mini came about, Apple attempted to modify the iconic electronic once again and developed a smaller, more affordable version of their device, creating one of the most popular devices in the iPod's history. The Mini was not just an offshoot of its older brother; the Mini was affordable, easy to carry and best of all, colorful. When the iPod Mini came into existence, it instantly found success, becoming one of the most popular Apple devices, and the success of the device was due largely to the characteristics it shared with its older, larger brothers.

iPod Video

The iPod Video would eventually pave the way for other electronics, such as the iPhone and even the iPod Touch. The iPod Photo was the first iPod in color, allowing people to set photos on their electronics using popular programs such as iPhoto and Windows Media. The iPod Video took things one step further and gave individuals the chance to place music videos, home movies and digital movies onto their iPod. However, what was a big success about the iPod Video was the reconstruction of iTunes, which moved from selling just music to selling music videos, television shows and even movies to its users.

iPhone

Had Apple never experienced luck with the iPod, the iPhone would never have been created. However, before the iPhone was created, the MotoRocker was Apple's first attempt at the phone business, allowing Motorola to design the phone but load it with Apple's operating system. The Rocker was a major failure and few users praised the phone, so instead of giving up, Apple created their own phone and loaded it with their operating system; this was the iPhone. The iPhone introduced the age of the touch screen, with its original controls, patented multi-touch technology and Internet capabilities. Each generation of the iPhone saw accessories being made for the device, such as iPhone 3GS covers, iPhone car radios and docking stations.
